        Character Stories

Baizhi, by her colleagues’ accounts in the Academy, is a hard person to reach out to. Though they work in the same department, she is rarely part of their conversations— be it their mutual sharing of research setbacks or the fun chatter during break time. Whenever they glance over, they see Baizhi cool, composed, meticulously assessing her data as a figure lost in her own world. Like a solitary module engrossed in its processing logic, she seems enveloped in an aura of silence that subtly distances her from the crowd.

This tranquility reflects on her research methods as well. On Mondays and Wednesdays, Baizhi studies the artificial Sonoro, while Fridays are dedicated to Remnant frequency band analysis. The remaining time is set aside for field research, Remnant biology observation, and case integration. She creates a robust plan for each stage and meticulously follows it, adjusting as necessary. If a task is incomplete, she doesn’t worry but simply continues to work on it unhurriedly. Encountering tough problems, she is never flustered but calmly delves deeper until she understands them.

This unwavering composure and self-efficiency make it difficult for her colleagues to find an opportunity to engage with Baizhi. Her stoic demeanor and objective tone further distance her from others. Thus, when Baizhi approached a researcher who had failed to submit a report on time, he was understandably nervous.

Stammering through his excuses, he was both surprised and relieved when Baizhi offered him a sample slice for his work. Observing his nervousness, she suggested next time he should notify her in advance of any similar issues, even recommending he increase the ambient temperature to mitigate his trembling. In her clear azure eyes, there was an innocent confusion that made the researcher stop in his tracks— reminded of what his colleagues often added about Baizhi— she might seem detached, but appearances could indeed be deceiving.

As an eleven-year-old, Baizhi was captivated by the simplicity of cause and effect. She observed a small sphere rolling down a curved path, its momentum tipping a lever upward. It was a predictable process, a pre-determined course which the sphere would always follow. This inspired young Baizhi and reminded her of a theory she recently read in a book: No matter the dynasty, the generation, or the civilization, humans were caught in the ever-rolling sphere of existence— destined to downfall, unable to escape their contrived trajectories. However, this sparked a profound question within Baizhi: If everything was a repetition of predetermined processes, where did meaning emerge?

As Baizhi grappled with these existential thoughts, her parents worried about her. They noted the passion for knowledge in their daughter, a feature they admired, yet they were concerned about her disconnect from reality. She rarely interacted with peers, immersing herself instead in complex theories, unreadable books, and intricate data simulations.

One afternoon, however, Baizhi received an invite to a scientific expedition base under the Huaxu Academy, where she witnessed a gargantuan device more complex and larger than anything she had seen before. Though intricately designed to mimic an organic system, the device had significant shortcomings. It wasn’t complete, and the uncertainty of possibilities made it unfit to guide the sphere. Absorbed in studying the existing parts, Baizhi started developing hypotheses and various simulations.

Upon observing her interest, a leader-figure in the team invited Baizhi to join them. When Baizhi pointed out the flaw in their design— an unfulfilled endgame— the warmhearted leader suggested that the destination could be a place ‘unknown yet comprehensible,’ and that as creators of the device, they could find that end point together.

Just then, the semi-closed door burst open, revealing the rest of the team members who had been eavesdropping. With friendly, expectant faces, they awaited Baizhi’s response. In that moment, Baizhi envisaged the sphere’s familiar crackling sound as it was positioned at the starting point of the device, hinting a newfound intrigue in the sphere’s journey—its destined and, now, possible unknown ends.

Four years into her journey with the scientific expedition team, Baizhi encountered the Remnant, marking a new pinnacle of her career in information research. She had outgrown the confines of her early academic solitude and was now surrounded by her team, exploring the depths of civilization.

In this new chapter, Baizhi learned to appreciate the tangible aspects of her research. She experienced the biting cold not as a mere figure on a thermometer but through the stark whiteness of endless snow, the shivering form despite protective gear, and the incessant task of warming survey instruments to prevent them from freezing.

Life taught her that theories were only the framework; they required the flesh and blood of experience to be whole. With her team, Baizhi ventured not to ordinary ruins but to spaces suffused with pure and complete Remnant energy—Sonoro.

Despite believing in the purity and completeness of “Remnant” as information energy, its intangible nature evaded capture and analysis—until they entered the ninth Sonoro. This unprecedented space wasn’t characterized by corruption or an accurate reflection of any known reality. The materials of its array of structures were indiscernible, bathed in a pearlescent glow streaming from a dome’s aperture.

Their arrival seemed to set off a mysterious sequence, with the suspended structures rearranging rapidly into symbolic and numerical images. Overwhelmed, Baizhi found herself unable to interpret what message this Sonoro was conveying, nor could she discern if it reflected past, present, or an unforeseen future.

But there was no time for astonishment, as the instinctual drive of a researcher spurred Baizhi and her team to meticulously document the phenomena. In their eyes, it all hinted at the potential for a novel theory. The survey instruments captured real-time frequency changes, and Baizhi, laser-focused and drawing upon a blend of accumulated theory and empirical understanding, sought the two ends of an energy extension.

Drawing a straight line connecting these points, she aimed for the intersection at the central nexus, extending the sampling device. As if in answer, the light surged, coalescing into a white Spectrum orb, capturing and manifesting the Remnant band. It was both complete and eerily hollow, pristine, and unblemished.

Little did Baizhi know at that moment, this pure white Spectrum would persist in another form, turning into the lifelong research subject that would forever accompany her, as she endeavored to decipher its secrets and the countless narratives it potentially held within.

For Baizhi, the concept of making a wish was fundamentally illogical. “Knowing that wishes are improbable, what is the purpose behind them? There’s no recipient for these wishes—are they ever truly heard? By whom?” Her inquisitive mindset often left her teammates in a state of bemusement, but over time, they had grown accustomed to her analytical nature, her convoluted manner of speaking which, to her, was the pursuit of truth and consistency.

Despite never making wishes herself, Baizhi stood by her teammates during their moments of hopeful yearning—over candle flames, under shooting stars. Even without fully grasping the sentiment, she tried to understand their actions and hopes. Her teammates, in turn, indulged in their wishes, accepting the difference between wishes and reality.

Then came a day on the ice fields when the world’s fabric seemed to unravel, and Baizhi witnessed the loss and fading of vivid lives around her. Overwhelmed by the desperate circumstances and facing the loss of her teammates—her invaluable companions in unravelling the enigmas of the Sonoro—Baizhi felt an uncharacteristic surge of emotion.

For the first time, she found herself with a wish of her own, albeit without knowing to whom it should be addressed or who might fulfill it. As the Sonoro contorted and the silence of the Tacet Discords enveloped her, her wish was fierce and clear: she longed for her teammates to return to consciousness, to open their eyes and step back into the world alongside her.

Amidst the collision of sorrow, anger, and defiance, a Tacet Mark materialized, and in response to Baizhi’s silent plea, a Remnant creature in the semblance of a Queen of the Night descended before her.

Nowadays, Baizhi refrains from making wishes, holding on to her credence that only tangible, achievable matters are within her control. But that single wish remains within her, akin to a number approaching zero—an enigma nestled in the depths of her heart, unfathomable yet undeniably present, an indelible mark of her humanity in the midst of an existence governed by logic and fact.

The events under the glacier became history, and Baizhi, the lone survivor, guarded her silence steadfastly. Inquisitive souls who sought out the secrets of that day returned empty-handed. There were no deep, dark truths to unveil—everyone had given their all. And in the realm of exploration, the prospect of falling in the line of discovery is a fate every researcher has contemplated. They seek truth, fully cognizant that mortality is a part of that truth.

Baizhi’s silence was not born of secrecy but of a loss for words; rehashing the past would change nothing. She preferred to direct her efforts toward pursuits where her unique capabilities as the sole remaining member of her team could make a difference.

In the Academy, Baizhi was a blur of motion, pioneering innovations in waveband analysis, Remnant applications, and Sonoro simulations. Her bold hypothesis—asserting that Remnant creatures were energy beings emerging from “empty shells,” potentially resonant with humanity and capable of manifesting beyond known bands—sent ripples through the academic community. The Remnant creature that returned with her from the Sonoro stood as proof. She named it You’tan, a nod to the Utpala, a flower that blooms at night only to wither by morning. It was akin to the pursuit of the Dharma, the elusive truth that researchers seek all their lives—fleeting and scarce.

This name might serve as both a tribute to her fallen companions and a reminder to persist in her quest. With an abundance of mysteries left unsolved, Baizhi understood there was no need to rush; she believed the destination was inevitable. Her journey with the sphere had taught her the value of patience and steadfast progress.

Moreover, Baizhi’s pathway was no longer solitary. In her search, she found camaraderie once more. On the outskirts of Huanglong, she encountered someone who might be considered a partner. This enigmatic individual’s origins were unclear, but at the sight of them absorbing “sound,” the once imperceptible noise echoed anew for Baizhi. It was reminiscent of the first time she had heard the sphere crackling as it settled into the device’s starting point—a sound marking the inception of discovery.

In that instance, Baizhi felt vindicated. The unknown yet knowable points, which represented humanity’s boundless pursuit of understanding, were indeed within reach.

Baizhi meticulously studied the behavioral patterns of You’tan and recorded detailed data. But many mysteries still surround this Remnant Creature: What is its composition? How did it come into existence? And are there other similar creatures to be found? Inspired by her colleague’s words, Baizhi embarked on a modeling project to recreate You’tan. The result is a complex model consisting of 205 components. It’s said that Baizhi can assemble it flawlessly, even with her eyes closed. While not as intricate as the real You’tan, this model serves as a deconstruction and ambitious attempt to replicate the creature from frequencies to a physical form.

Huanglong officials presented this Medal of Honor to the entire team for their contribution to the field of Remnant acoustics and for their courageous research spirit. As the only survivor of the team, Baizhi received the medal on her behalf and has kept it ever since. It is a remembrance and an honor. There are still many uncharted territories in the field of science waiting for explorers like them to enter and make their voices heard, and humans will respond positively to their voices, which is the meaning of their research “Remnant”.

        Inspection Report

        Evaluation Basis [Resonance Assessment 2190-G]

Resonator Baizhi experienced her Awakening four years ago, after being exposed to a strong Remnant Energy source one year prior. This exposure caused the activation of the corresponding Remnant frequencies within her. According to Baizhi’s recounts, she experienced a strong urge to revive a teammate during her Awakening. As a result, the aforementioned frequencies manifested as a Remnant Creature that now serves as her companion.

Resonator Baizhi’s Tacet Mark is located on the anterior side of her right thigh. No significant physical alterations after Awakening have been observed. However, when exerting her Forte, the Tacet Mark emits a faint white glow with the advent of the above Remnant Creature. The creature is translucent white in color and resembles the petals of Epiphyllum. It is unable to vocalize in human language, but can communicate with Baizhi through telepathy.

Resonator Baizhi cannot directly utilize her Forte, but she can leverage the extremely low temperature and her Remnant Creature’s healing abilities to treat injuries in her vicinity.

Resonator Baizhi’s Resonance Spectrum Pattern does not resemble any known frequencies. However, it shows a certain level of similarity with the fluctuations of Remnant Energy, and it possesses a strong Syntony Response with “You’tan”, her Remnant Creature. Despite these connections, the cause of Baizhi’s Awakening remains unclear without adequate theoretical evidence.

The non-convergent Rabelle’s Curve of Resonator Baizhi displays a gradual increase in the initial stage, followed by a sharp climb in the middle section. The test results thus categorize Baizhi as a Mutant Resonator with a Dormant Period.

The waveform graph of Baizhi illustrates an elliptical fluctuation with a stable Time Domain. No abnormal parameters are observed in the test sample.

Resonant Criticality: High. Resonator Baizhi’s frequency displays high stability with currently no risk of Overclocking.

Baizhi has no documented history of Overclocking, which reduces the necessity for counseling. Due to the strong bond between Baizhi and her Remnant Creature, regular examinations on the Remnant Creature’s status are recommended to mitigate any potential latent risks.

        About

Withdraw a portion of one’s ego, then attach it to the existence of another being in the form of vibrating energy… sounds incredible, doesn’t it?

It was in this manner that You’tan came into existence. I am yet to uncover all the secrets of the Remnant Creatures, but perhaps that’s why You’tan responded to my call-so I may
devote my life in search of the answer.

When I have the time, I travel around Huanglong to explore. I sample local delicacies, talk to people, and observe their daily lives.

Theory alone cannot convey the full truth; to reach an accurate conclusion, I must experience it firsthand.

You possess special powers related to sound. By observing you… I may be able to find a breakthrough in Ecoacoustics studies. If this ever makes you uncomfortable, please do let me know. Maintaining interpersonal relationships is not my strong suit, but I want to keep a balance between satiating my desire for knowledge and respecting your boundaries.

        Developer’s Notes

As one of the three companions Rover would meet early on in the journey, Baizhi is a rather cold and reserved person when compared to the gentleness of Yangyang and the enthusiastic Chixia.

Not only a “Cold Beauty” who distances herself from others, as an archaeologist of the Huanglong Academy, Baizhi’s personality also bears the rationality that of a scientist.

Thus, due to having extreme rationale, Baizhi features some peculiar traits. One of which is showing meticulous attention to details, not being able to stand descriptions such as “a touch of oil” within cooking recipes, and instead she will precisely measure the amount of ingredients needed using a proper scale…

You’tan is a Remnant symbiotically connected with Baizhi. It obeys Baizhi’s commands, and is able to reflect her physical condition to a certain degree.

Baizhi was once left in a life-threatening situation, one which downright demolished her trust of other human beings, leading to You’tan’s birth in the process. In Baizhi’s own words, You’tan is “a copy of myself”.

Rather to have trust in others, Baizhi is more willing to trust You’tan. You’tan also seems to possess powers of inversion, embodying Baizhi’s kindness and will within itself.

Similar to her name “Baizhi”, White Lotus, Baizhi’s appearance shows hints of her cold personality. Her clothing style features simple yet elegant black & white coloring.

On the other hand, Baizhi is a lady of action who would more than often explore archaeological sites personally. Therefore, her outfit is rather close-fitting and function orientated, at the same time not lacking in Huanglong characteristics in its detailing.

You’tan presents an airy and streamlined overall appearance, showing matching elegance to that of Baizhi. The many mysterious petal-like patterns that surround its body can also be seen as an echo to its master’s name.

The entirety of You’tan‘s tail section is hollow, which extends a sound spectrum acting as the connection with Baizhi. You’tan’s personalities can also be examined during combats and interactions with Baizhi.
