Character Stories
Chixia’s ancestors were migrants to Jinzhou from the Central Plains, with their later generations settling in the city ever since. The family is well-known for their deep passion and expertise in the world of spices.
As the sun painted the Jinzhou skyline with its morning light, the first sign of activity would always come from Panhua’s Kitchen, where plumes of smoke billow from its chimney.
“Mornin’, Ms. Panhua. A bowl of handmade noodles, please. Extra numb and spicy.” A loud and clear voice overshadowed the rising hustle and bustle of the city outside the kitchen, immediately capturing the attention of several children nearby, their eyes lighting up with admiration.
“Miss Chixia, when are we having today’s Overdashing lessons?” one of the children asked eagerly.
“Your students look more psyched than you are,” Panhua teased as she served Chixia and the children their breakfast.
“What’s the hurry, I’m not even warmed up yet! Plus, ya can’t work on an empty stomach,” Chixia replied between mouthfuls of spicy noodles. For her, an energetic day begins with a spicy tingle to the taste buds.
Chixia relished each bite of spicy chili peppers, washing them down with steaming soup. Her body glowed with warmth as the food settled in her stomach. With the last slurp of noodles, Chixia wiped her mouth in satisfaction. “Now I’m all fired up!”
In Huanglong, a saying goes: “One should do good deeds anonymously”. However, Chixia doesn’t agree with this. She believes that “If we all stay anonymous, how will people know who to call for help next time they’re in danger?”
“A hero,” she asserts, “must shout their name loud and clear for everyone to remember!” These words set her goal on her first day of aspiring to become a hero.
Having been enamored by superheroes since childhood, such as Speedster and Fiamma from Hero Plays, Chixia has always dreamed of making her own heroic name. She wished to be remembered, just like them, whose names invoked courage and comfort.
When she helps someone, Chixia always makes sure to leave her mark. She even teaches children to write down her name one stroke at a time. This way, everyone in Jinzhou remembers her and her name has spread like wildfire.
People constantly call out “Chixia” whenever they need help. The name has become so common that even foreign merchants who are unable to speak the local language, mistake “Chixia” as a customary greeting and just follow the trend.
However, despite her fiery passion and unwavering determination, Chixia still has her own set of worries. She bravely battles bandits, Tacet Discords, and suspicious figures in red on the outskirts of Jinzhou. But dangers always surface in unexpected ways, irrespective of her efforts to protect the city.
Often, she wonders, “Have I truly lived up to the standards of a hero in everyone’s eyes?” But, she also finds solace in the smiles of those she protects. In those moments, all her worries dissipate instantly.
Meanwhile, the children of Jinzhou don’t care about any of this. In their play-pretend games, they have already awarded the role of a hero to their big sister Chixia, who they see with fiery admiration.
Hero Plays are a spectacular attraction in Jinzhou, and Chixia is undoubtedly one of their biggest fans. The poised actors, resounding drum beats, and the gracefully flowing water sleeve movements never fail to impress her. However, what she relishes most is the Kindlefire technique that symbolizes Fiamia’s magnificent entrance.
In the depth of darkness, a torch is lit. It shoots a fiery ball into the sky that subsequently ignites the surrounding candles. This stunning display leaves the audience mesmerized, and the air gradually fills with the faint smell of burning wood.
This light and familiar aroma always catapults Chixia back to her childhood. It reminds her of her adventurous journeys with her parents in the wild, their migrations to Jinzhou, and their encampments. At night, the wilderness would become an ominous place. The engulfing darkness threatened their safety, silently swallowing everything, including Chixia’s small tent where she sought refuge.
Alone in the dark, Chixia would hold her blankets close, retell the heroic tales her mother read to her before bedtime, and hope that Fiamia would protect her from the lurking Tacet Discords. This would trigger the imagination of a fire in her mind, with its light growing brighter on the fabric wall inside her small tent.
Suddenly, her reverie is disrupted by Little Jiu’s excited voice from the adjacent seat, “Look! It’s Fiamia!” Indeed, the majestic Fiamia is descending from the sky, triumphant torch in hand, causing the wicked Fluffernox to retreat hastily. The audience’s applause is deafening, and Chixia joins in, clapping louder than anyone else.
After coming back from the theatre, Chixia prepares for her patrol, grabbing a simple torch before stepping out. Observing this, her mother, busy preparing her stir-fry with generous amounts of hot sauce, remarks, “You’re still holdin’ on to that doodad? I’ve lost count of the years you’ve had it. Didn’t the department give you a lot of new equipment and stuff?”
But Chixia is unfazed and retorts confidently, “No worries! This one’s bright enough to last another hundred years!”
During one of her nightly patrols, Chixia was investigating a peculiar case. Residents had reported hearing strange noises on their roofs for several nights in a row. However, whenever they checked, they found nothing. Armed with her torch and engulfed in darkness, Chixia climbed the roofs to investigate. As she scanned the area, her eye caught a glimpse of a crumpled piece of Fiamma clipart, hidden among the roof tiles.
Just as Chixia was about to inspect it closer, a shadow suddenly leaped out, startling her. She quickly directed her torch toward the unexpected visitor, revealing the face of a small child. Seizing the moment of Chixia’s surprise, the child snatched the clipart from her hand and disappeared into the night.
Chixia searched the area but found no trace of the child. She continued her search until dawn when she reached a half-open window from which a child’s singing voice emerged, reciting one of Fiamma’s lines. Following the voice, Chixia replied with another line from the play, prompting a small head to peek out the window, its eyes alight with excitement at finding a fellow fan.
The child, Little Jiu, had recently moved to Jinzhou with his family. With his parents working long hours, he and his sister were often left alone. His sister, being timid, was always afraid of a Fluffernox lurking on their roof. To protect her, Little Jiu had taken it upon himself to patrol the rooftops at night.
Admitting his admiration for Fiamma with a hint of embarrassment, Little Jiu revealed he had only heard the lines from outside the theater, worried he might have gotten them wrong. Chixia reassured him, suggesting he take his sister to see the Hero Plays and witness Fiamma’s battles in person to alleviate her fears.
However, Little Jiu hesitated, explaining his parents’ financial struggles. Understanding his situation, Chixia made a proposal: if Little Jiu agreed to stay off the rooftops, making her job easier, she would secure them tickets to the Hero Plays. Eagerly accepting the deal, Little Jiu agreed, grateful for Chixia’s kindness and support.
Chixia’s colleagues couldn’t hide their bewilderment when she chose to become a Community Patroller upon her graduation. After all the effort she had put in to join the Public Security Bureau— after numerous attempts at passing the entrance exam— this decision seemed to deviate from the path of heroism she so passionately pursued. Everyone had assumed that Chixia was destined for a lofty rank, and her unexpected choice left them puzzled.
Whenever questioned about her decision, she would merely flash a wide smile and say, “I just can’t leave Jinzhou. The spicy noodles, the theater, and my friends: Little Jiu, Qianqian, Ali…” But beneath that simple explanation lay a complex tale that words could hardly encapsulate. Only Chixia fully grasped the profoundness of her choice.
The seed of her dedication was planted in her childhood, kindled by her family’s guiding torches and magnified by the dramatic heroics she adored in the theater. On one dark and tumultuous night, her inner spark nearly extinguished but was rekindled into a fierce blaze by a fortuitous flash of lightning. That was the night Chixia, emulating Fiamma with a makeshift torch, faced bandits in a futile attempt to defend her friend Ali. As she prepared to shield Ali with her own body, a sudden, striking bolt brought down the bandits and revealed to her the badge of her rescuer amidst the chaos of flashing lightning.
Years later, Chixia’s dreams were realized as she passed the Public Security Bureau’s entrance exam. Yet the memory of that night and her mysterious savior stayed with her. As time unfolded, she began to discern the silent sacrifice of her rescuer’s choice to remain hidden, and she acknowledged that their path wasn’t one she could follow.
Facing the form for her assignment selection, Chixia contemplated the “Community Patroller” position, which seldom garnered any attention and quietly placed her checkmark there. She understood that while she wouldn’t wield the power of lightning, she had a unique role to fulfill— protecting the day-to-day peace and simple joys of the civilians’ lives. In her heart, she knew this was where she could best serve, where her own kind of heroism could shine.
Treasured Items

Chixia’s heroic actions have made her a celebrated figure in Jinzhou. Though she wasn’t seeking fame, the heartfelt praises she received have motivated her to continue chasing her dreams.

A jar of special hot sauce, made according to Chixia’s secret family recipe, served in a trophy that Chixia had won before. Chixia cherished this trophy a lot, but this amazing sauce certainly deserves to be put in here. Its flavor is fresh, salty, tangy and numbing, and in Chixia’s words, “That sauce is so good, you’ll munch an old shoe with it.”

A Patroller badge and a Fiamma merchandise. The badge has been meticulously decorated, and the merchandise has many signs of wear and tear. Both have been polished to a gleaming shine.

Developer’s Notes
In an overall depressing world, there is a passionate and candid companion, unfearful of letting her emotions be heard, accompanying Rover carrying out more and more exciting adventures going forward.
By featuring eye-catching bright red colors in her appearance, along with a backward-tied sprout, all of which manifests the passionate and high-spirited characteristics of Chixia.
Chixia’s outfit bears a rather bold style similar to collage and cut-out arts. During battles, parts of her outfit flutters with the wind as she performs actions, further highlighting the superb pistol-wielding skills of Tiancheng’s favorite hero.
Chixia features various distinctive personal traits, such as fondness towards spices, and cherishing of the macram bracelets she wears from her home, etc. These reflect her status of being a migrant to Tiancheng, which in turn draws out a detailed and complete worldview of Huanglong.
Throughout the history of Huanglong, many migrants from various regions of the nation moved to Tiancheng. The Ma family was one of the many.
As Xiaofang pursues her hero dream, she always wanted a renowned nickname of her own, just like those from the plays, to boost confidence when in need. Hence the nickname “Chixia”, Blazing Dawn.
But of course, besides these “glorified excuses”, the real reason behind the nickname contains notions of Xiaofang’s own personal motives. Which is something that is left for Rover to discover.
Having witnessed her own courageous father fighting for his nation, the regular visit to hero-themed plays during her childhood, and even the valiant atmosphere among the Tiancheng population resisting the Wuthering Waves, all played a part in the illumination of Chixia’s passion for heroism.
A hero can be many forms, whether it be a distinguished warrior possessing the might to turn the tides of battle, or an unsung servant who gives in silence yet asks for nothing in return.
For Chixia, the word “hero” means someone who can face their fears head on, someone that’s able to safeguard those in need during critical times. No matter family, friends, or any other person requiring assistance, Chixia is always the first to step forward.
By exploring a variety of directions, Chixia ultimately chose to pursue this path in mind. She is a vibrant figure for the entire Tiancheng to view.
